“We should become the time-zombies…”
[…] the temporal reality of nonhuman life is limited almost entirely to the present. In the worlds of the most advanced species there are slight extensions of that press to the immediate future and past. Chimps, for instance, can play hide-and-seek. But even for apes, time is always “banana now.” It is never “banana for my grandchildren yet to be born” or “banana last month.” […]
Members of our species were able to conceive and create the great cultural continuities of humankind – the arts, letters, and sciences – because the mind’s reality embraced the immensity of time from the distant pasts to distant futures […]
If in our individual and collective behavior we were to let our mental present deteriorate to a “banana-now” present – which is as close to the nanosecond world as we can get in practical terms – then we should lose the very capacity that built human civilizations. We should become the time-zombies of a banana-now republic.
Could this happen?
Yes, it could.
Towards Love
I have packed my parcels
Each, in hope, wrapped
With love
Bundled wants and dreams
Ideas of future things
And love
They fit in well-worn cases
Stamped from those past
I’ve loved
I stand gazing at the glowing way
Marked out with lighted signs
Of love
I leave them there, my precious packs
Unburdening my heart and mind
For love
I step into the shining path
With a wind behind my back
Towards love

Speaking of the future…
Total Entertainment Forever

Every night inside the Oculus Rift
After mister and the missus finish dinner and the dishes
And now the future’s definition is so much higher than it was last year
It’s like the images have all become real
And someone’s living my life for me out in the mirror
No, can you believe how far we’ve come
In the New Age?
Freedom to have what you want
In the New Age we’ll all be entertained
Rich or poor, the channels are all the same
You’re a star now, baby, so dry your tears
You’re just like them
Wake on up from the nightmare
Time is Weird
This morning started out really well. I was on top things. I got up early enough. I woke up the kids on time. Made them laugh and fed them. So far so good.
Then instantly we were running late. We only had 10 minutes to get to school. I don’t know what happened. Time is weird, you know?
Then Stress, my annoying neighbor, showed up at my door, knocking incessantly (as he does – he never rings the doorbell like a normal person).
I didn’t let him in – so he kept knocking. Argh!
We did, however, make it to school on time, somehow.
